Hittin' the Jackpot in more ways than one

#1. Miss Madalyn has decided that it is now a good idea to sleep through the night! She has done it two nights in a row. What's funny is the panic it causes in us, when we both leap out of bed at 630 in the morning realizing she hasn't woken up in the night, and run to the crib to make sure she is still breathing! Hopefully we'll get used to the idea soon and relax!

#2. My work Christmas party was last night and Chris and I each won the two top prizes! I came away with a beautiful basket filled with wine, wine glasses, and some fancy wine accessories! Chris came away with printer that is also a copier and fax machine! It can also pring photos right from the camera card! We paid 15 bucks for one dinner ticket and came away with over 300 dollars worth of prizes. I'd say that's a pretty good deal!

In other news: We left Madalyn with a babysitter last night and had our first night out together without her. We had lots of fun while Madalyn had a good time with a friend's mum. Aside from everyone asking me how I was doing without her every five minutes it was a great night! For the record, I thought of her often throughout the night and did miss her, but I was not worried a bit about her!

Chris' work party is this afternoon and kids are going to this one, so I imagine it will be shorter than the one last night. We'll be having two turkey dinners in two days! I guess that is how you know Christmas is fast approaching!

Hope everyone else is having a good weekend!

The bravery of a scaredy-cat dog

So the weather has finally turned and we've gone from -40 to +5!!! Such a relief! Scout, Madalyn and I have been able to get back into our routine of daily walks, which have been real workouts since we have to trudge through heavy melting snow now! For anyone who has not met Scout, she is known to be one of the wussiest, most skittish dogs on the planet! She is such a chicken! Usually she is scared of anyone new and different, and if given the choice, would run the other way. This past week, though, she has decided that she is now a guard dog, and must protect her mummy and baby. Three times this week we have come across different people on our walk and each time they have come close to us and said something (usually "hi") Scout gets her heckles up and barks at them! I don't know where this timid creature has found these little moments of bravery, but it is a tad distressing! It would be one thing if it was some strange suspicious man and we were in a dark alley, but no, she seems to now do it at anyone who walks by. We'll now have to get her out of that habit!! The mail carrier tamed her today with a doggie treat on our walk. If only all non-threatening strangers carried dog treats!

Sunday, November 19, 2006

So, we've been getting complaints about our lack of blogging in the last few weeks, so here's an update. We've been busy with visitors lately. Chris' friend Matt from Saskatoon came up for just shy of a week and then Allison and Sang arrived for four days. We enjoyed the company and had fun with everybody.
We've had bucket loads of snow up here and it has been pretty cold (between -10 and -25 for the past few weeks. It feels like the middle of January not November. It's a far cry from last November when there was no snow on the ground and it was above zero until after Christmas!!
Madalyn is becoming more and more interactive every day and therefore more and more fun! She's making all sorts of fun faces and really starting to enjoy looking at and touching her toys.
We're getting excited for our trip back to Winnipeg. I think we have 3 weeks and two days to go!

Getting Strong

Madalyn is getting better and better at holding up her head and keeping it up for quite some time.

Playtime

Madalyn and Scout spend part of every morning playing on the floor gym and they both love it. We've even caught Scout playing with it by herself! She loves to push the nose of the train so that it plays music!

Visitors

Allison and Sang came up for a visit a few weeks ago and we were very happy to see them. It was fun to hang out together and show off Madalyn. Madalyn enjoyed all the extra cuddles and they even had the patience to teach me and Chris canasta (I am terrible at card games.

Sweetpea

This is Madalyn a few days ago after a bath. Usually she is very calm and relaxed when she' in the tub, but she hates getting out and will scream until she is dry and dressed again! Well, the other night she only fussed for a couple of seconds when coming out of the tub and was quiet! Here she is all wrapped up in her towel looking like a little pea in a pod!

Trick or Treat!

This is Madalyn on her first Halloween. Since it seemed near impossible to find a Halloween costume to fit her, we decided to add some brown ears to a fleecy brown outfit she had for going outside in. She is supposed to be a little bear cub. So cute!! No trick or treating for her tonight although she did visit Mummy's work today and is helping Daddy hand out candy tonight. Hope everyone is having a safe and fun Halloween!

Sweet Smiles

Madalyn is down for her midday nap, so I thought I would take the time to do a little blogging. I don't think I've posted anything since she's been born!
She turned one month old last Friday and over the weekend she has begun to grace us with genuine smiles! She gets all excited and then gives a big smile that has a nice little cooing sound that goes along with it. The first time she gave me one she made me cry because it was just the most gorgeous thing I had ever seen! She loves giving smiles to Chris when he talks to her in funny voices. She's still quite the night owl, but getting a bit better.
In other news, Scout, Madalyn and I went for our daily walk yesterday (Chris was at home watching Sunday football)and we came across a group of deer. We were walking down the sidewalk and this deer came out of the bushes. She stood there looking at us, so we stopped and looked back. Then I thought, "Deer are harmless, right? I can walk towards it and past it." So I started walking towards it, and then it started to walk towards me, which made me think hat wasn't such a good idea. So we turned to walk back the way we had come and then the deer ran across the road. Two more deer jumped across the road after the first, and we then continued on our normal route. Scout was very interested in the deer. I'd love to know what she thinks of them. Does she think they are really big dogs, or other animals? It would be so interesting to get inside their heads and see what goes on in there.
Madalyn is starting to wake up, so that's my cue to sign off!

Wedding weekend

We made it through the weekend of wedding celebrations and had a wonderful time. The Canadian wedding was on Saturday and Allison looked beautiful in her dress. Mary, Christine and I had lots of fun being bridesmaids, and speeches seemed far less stressful this time around. They had an excellent venue for pictures and for dinner and great fun was had by all!
The next evening we had a Vietnamese celebration for Allison and Sang which was a fun and interesting expereience as well. We saw and tasted all sorts of foods we hadn't before and the explanations of how things were made was pretty interesting. Allison and Sang looked smashing again, but I am sure with this having been there second day of pictures that their face muscles must have been sore! We'll put up a few pictures when we get their permission, but right now they are off camping, so you'll have to wait a little bit for that.
Hope everyone else had a fun weekend too!

Wedding Bells

Today is Allison and Sang's big day and we are so happy that we were able to make it back to Winnipeg so that we could be a part of it. Baby is so far cooperating and showing no signs of making his/her appearance today so hopefully we will make it through the day! It's going to be lots of fun and we can't wait!! Weddings are always so much fun! I'm off to get my hair done now!

Weekend in Prince George

Chris, Scout and I spent this past weekend on a roadtrip to Prince George. We decided to head down there because we wanted to go on a trip for our anniversary weekend and we thought we should go somewhere we'd never been before and probably wouldn't go to if we didn't live up here. So, Prince George seemed like the obvious choice being only a five hour drive away and through the infamous Pine Pass.
We left Friday morning and arrived in Prince George around 2 o'clock.
On Saturday morning, after a visit to the Tourist Info Centre, we found a nice spot for a walk called Cottonwood Isle Park. It was very lush and green and filled with giant cottonwood trees. What made the park really special was that an artist had begun to carve faces in some of the trees that were really amazing! It made the trees seem like they were alive and watching us! A forest full of elves! Here is a picture of one of them.
So after a weekend of naturewalks, shopping and eating in restaurants we don't have in FSJ we headed back on Sunday. On the way home we saw both a black bear and a moose, and also came across a roadside waterfall in the Pine Pass where we stopped to have a little walk for Scout. Here's the waterfall and us at the waterfall!

Hope everyone else had a nice long weekend!

A New Career...Maybe Not

So Chris needed a haircut pretty badly and we all know how he doesn't like to pay 20 bucks every time he gets his hair cut. We found a kit that costs as much as a haircut and then I tried to do it for him. I was nervous to do it and I was worried about leaving bald patches all over his head! Fortunately there is only one bald patch that is pretty small and at the back. The way his hair grows it'll be gone in no time and he didn't seem too worried about it.
Hopefully all I need is some practice, it was after all, a first attempt. We'll see if he lets me do it again! Here is the result.

The Mystery of the Missing Snowpeas

So, the other day I was out in the backyard with Scout checking out the veggie garden. I discovered that the beets and some of the snowpeas were ready to be picked, so I dug right in and started to pick the peas and pull out the beets.
I made a big pile of peas on the patio table and ran inside for scissors and a bowl to cut the tops off the beets and put them in the bowl to wash off. When I came back outside my pea pile looked decidedly smaller. I looked from side to side, but nothing out of the ordinary seemed to be going on. They hadn't fallen off the table to be scattered all across the lawn and there were no birds in sight big enough to carry them off. Well, maybe I just hadn't picked as many as I thought and I brushed it off.
The next day I went to pick some more peas of the vine, as it seems they are at the stage where there are more of them ready to pick every day. There were less on the vines that I remembered, this was true the next day as well!
Then today I was mowing the lawn and noticed Scout over by the veggie patch. She know she is not allowed in it, but fortunately for her, the peas are right on the edge. My health-conscious, veggie-loving dog was delicately picking snowpeas off the vine and then crunching away on them!!
Mystery solved! Scout is the culprit!

Hot, hot, hot

So it's 31 degrees, not a cloud in the sky and me without any air conditioning! Whew!! Scout and I are hiding out in the shade of the house with all the windows open the fan going and the blinds closed, with lots of cool drinks!
Chris is lucky to be in an air conditioned office today! I think it should be take-your-family-to-work-Day so that we can get in on some of that nice air conditioning action!
Stay cool everybody!

Recovering from a busy weekend

This is Scout having a Monday afternoon nap, to recover from the busy weekend! By dinner time she'll be hyper and ready to play. Perfect timing for Chris to come home from work!

Baby related stuff

We decided to put the crib together this afternoon (and by we, I mean mostly Chris put it together and I watched), so here it is. Also I have had many requests for "tummy" pictures, so here you go!

Close Encounters of the Moose Kind

So yesterday Chris and I were driving along around 630 on our way home from Grande Prairie Just chatting, when all of a sudden Chris hits the breaks and a big Moose cow walks out in front of us! Behind her on the side of the road is another Moose. They were pretty darn big, and not the least bit concerned looking as they ambled across the road. It's amazing how big they are in person, and these were females, the males then to be an extra 500 to 750 pounds and they have the big impressive rack! It would have been perfect for my mum to be there, as that is just the encounter she was looking for when they last visited! It was very cool to see.
Anyway, our Grande Prairie trip as very productive. We managed to find a stroller and car seat combo that we like, Chris used his birthday gift cert from Mary and Colin at Future Shop to buy an xbox game he wanted, we of course, went to Michaels, but it was just in and out because I knew exactly what I needed and we also got some good shopping done at Superstore. We also managed to feed a Pita Pit craving (for Chris, not me).
Now that it is Sunday we plan to relax and not do a whole lot of anything, except walk the dog, I think.

Rain, rain don't go away!

Yesterday it finally rained!!!! It hasn't rained here since May! There are forest fires all over the place and you can see and feel the smoke in the air in town. Tumbler Ridge which is two hours away was evacuated because of a really big fire near them. We were so in need of this rain! We had a water ban and everything! It was also supposed to rain today (it hasn't) and it is supposed to rain tomorrow, but I won't hold my breath. The weird thing about weather up here is that if it is supposed to rain it NEVER does, and if it isn't, then all of a sudden, BOOM, there it is.

Happy Birthday Scout...and Canada

Today was Scout's first birthday! She had a great day with a special breakfast, two new toys, some new treats and a nice long walk.
We also celebrated Canada Day by joining friends for the Canada Day parade and then back to their place for snacks, and a rousing game of Bocci. Having never played before, I even came in second!
The rest of the afternoon was spent being lazy at home after having a bit too much sun earlier on today. Tonight we're having a late evening barbeque dinner and then watching the fireworks from our back deck.
We hope the rest of you are having a fun and enjoyable Canada Day!

Ta Da!

Scout supervised the situation.

Here it is!

And Chris did it all by himself!

Stay tuned...

The deck will be finished later today!! So stay tuned for pictures!!

Winnipeg Parks Rose

Chris and I were at the nursery looking for things for the yard, about a month ago. We decided on buying a rose bush, because of its name: Winnipeg Parks Rose. At the time there were no buds on it yet, but over the past month it has grown buds, and made some beautiful blossoms! This is what one of them looked like on Friday.

Scout's favorite way to get a drink

Date Night

So, Chris and I had a date last night. We went out for dinner to East Side Marios, where we have not gone since before Christmas, and then to the movies. It was a choice between the Davinci Code and The BreakUp, so we chose the 2nd one. I'd heard from people that it didn't get very good reviews, but both of us wanted to see it, so we did.
We both enjoyed it. There are many more funny parts in the movie than they show on the commercials, and we were laughing through a good portion of it. It has sort of a different ending than you expect, but a good one. Now I know it was just a movie, and not real, but let me tell you, it made me appreciate Chris more. If you have a significant other who is willing to help you do things without you having to ask (ie. the dishes, laundry, vacuuming...what have you)then you will think them even more wonderful after watching this movie. At least I did. I tell you, that guy (in the movie, Vince Vaughn) may be funny, but if you had to live with him, you would want to beat him up with a baseball bat on a daily basis!!
Anyway, Happy Sunday to all. I hope you're having a nice sunny weekend!

Happy Birthday!!!

Today is Michelle's 18th birthday! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! She is officially an adult (this side of the border anyway)!!
We've heard there will be a wild and crazy party tonight and we're sorry to miss it! Mary and Elizabeth, make sure you keep her nice and safe tonight! I'm sure you will!. Have fun Michelle, you only turn 18 once!!!

A Beautiful Day...

It has been a long time since we've posted,so I thought I should put something up in case any one was wondering if we still existed.
Since our last post we have made some renovations to our new place. Changing all the knobs on the kitchen cupboards, putting in some new light fixtures, and quite a bit of painting.
My parents came to visit for the Easter long weekend, which seemed to go by much too quickly, but we managed to get some house things done with their help as well as do some sight-seeing too. Alas, the moose were elusive that weekend, and we only saw two from very far away!!! Maybe next time, Mum.
This weekend I painted the kitchen and started on some lawn work, by getting some grass seed and a hose. I've done a section and we'll see how quick it grows in. Today was an absolutely gorgeous day. I don't know the temp, but I know I was wearing a tshirt and capris and even though I was eating a popsicle in the backyard, I was still very warm. I also had to go and find a hat because I could feel my head starting to burn!
Chris got his bike out today because he is planning to ride it to and from work now that the weather has turned so much nicer! He just needs to go and get some air for his tires and he is good to go!
We had a picnic in the park today at lunch time, which Scout really enjoyed. In fact she has been outside nonstop today since about 10 this morning. Tonight we're having another yummy barbeque! If only it was Friday night and we still had two more days to our weekend!
HOpe everyone else had a nice weekend too!! I know there was good weather in Winnipeg.

And....we're in

It is now Saturday and as of about 630 last night we have been officially moved out of the townhouse and into our new house. It has been an ongoing process all week, with working all day, moving all evening, and then back to work again the next morning. Not fun, but we're definitely glad to be over and done with. The two extra bedrooms are the only ones with boxes that need to be organized. Everything else seems to be organized now. Scout loves her backyard and as more and more of the snow melts and more mud appears she seems to love it even more. She hates having her feet wiped off with the towel, but she will have lots of practice with it in the next few weeks.
We bought a barbeque last night that we are going to test out tonight with chicken kebabs, baked potatoes and coleslaw! Yummy!!! Chris thinks he has successfully put it together so, I guess we will find out when he lights it tonight!
Barbeque season is here!!
Chris signed up to be put on a baseball team this morning, so hopefully that will start up soon as well.
That is about it for the news this week. We're moved in and enjoying the quiet of a house without attached neighbours and a busy parking lot out front!

Moving Day Approaches...

Moving Day is fast approaching. We get the place on Monday and this weekend has been about cleaning, organizing and packing. Not the most exciting way to spend the weekend, but there you go.
I have also spent a good portion of the day trying to sneak up on Scout to cut her ridiculously long nails!! She hates the clipper for some reason. I don't know why because I have never given her a bad experience with it. Anyway it is now 340 and I have been trying since 100. I have managed to clip 1.5 nails, so at this rate I still have quite a bit of time to dedicate to this endeavor!!
It's a beautiful warm sunny day here today, which means that our place right now is surrounded by a huge lake from melting snow. If this continues we might have to rent a boat to move instead of a truck!!

Saturday, March 18, 2006

We're ba-ack!!

We made it back from our journey last night, only to come home to -20 and blustery snow!! We thought about just staying on the plane and seeing if it would take us back to warmer weather without anyone noticing we were still on it, but we missed our little Scout, so we had to get off!
I ran into a few people in the airport that I know from work and they promised me it would be raining here by Monday so lets hope they are right!!
We arrived in San Diego late Sunday night to pouring rain, but when we woke up bright and early on Monday (about 630) it was nice and sunny! We decided to spend our first day at the zoo, so after some breakfast we took a cab to Balboa Park for some zoo fun! We spent about 7 hours at the zoo and managed to go to every single exhibit!! We saw lions and tigers and bears, oh my, and gorillas and hippos and giraffes and koalas and all sorts of cute cuddly looking things, and scary nasty looking things as well! It was a very fun day and our feet were really aching by the end of it! We took a cab downtown to a really interesting shopping centre called Horton Plaza. All the malls in San Diego are outdoor malls because it rarely rains there. We ended up finding some dinner and then decided to see a movie to rest our aching feet.
On Tuesday we took a trolley tour of the city, which started off in Old Twon (the original San Diego) from a few hundred years ago, which is a really ocol area of town and only a ten minute walk from our hotel. We then went to the harbour where we went to the maritime museum and went on an old russian sub, which was kind of scary, the Star of India, which is a really beautiful ship, and then they were borrowing the ship from Master and Commander so we went on that one as well and saw all the movie props and stuff, which was cool. After that we headed down to Seaport Village which is a collection of interesting shops and eateries and fun looking around there. We also stopped for some Ben and Jerry's ice cream!! YUMMMMMM!!!!
AFter that we headed to Coronado Island, which is across the bay from San Diego and not really an island, but that is what it is called. It is a gorgeous area with beautiful homes, and one of the top ten beaches in the world!! SO of course, we had to take of our shoes and socks and walk along the beach. It was so nice!! At the end of the day we took the trolley back to Old Town and looked around there some more. We went to the first graveyard in the area and it was really interesting to read about the people there. We had dinner at the Cafe Coyote, which was ranked the best restaurant in San Diego last year. It was very good, but VERY filling, and I ended up bringing half my dinner home with me!
Wednesday we took a trolley to Mission Valley, where one of the best malls is, and we did a bunch of shopping. I managed to find some clothes for the next few months and Chris got a couple of things at Old Navy. It was another outdoor mall, and very nice. We spent part of the afternoon by the pool at the hotel, and then did some more walking around the area our hotel was in. That night we had dinner with some old family friends whose kids I used to look after when they were babies in Winnipeg. They have grown from sweet, happy babies, to very smart and wonderful kids. We had a great night chatting with them and catching up.
Thursday was our last full day in San Diego and we started if off by going back to Balboa Park where along with the zoo there are also many many museums. We decided the Museum of Man looked the most interesting and spent the morning pottering around there and looking at all the things it had to offer. In the afternoon we walked from the park back down to the harbour front where we found some lunch and then took a two hour harbour cruise of the north and south bay. It was a very nice day to be out on a boat and we really enjoyed it. That finished by about 530 and we then walked ourselves back to Seaport Village where we caught a cab and had dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe San Diego. We decided to pig out on our final meal in San Deigo and managed to make it through from appetizers to dessert! They had to roll us out the front door, and we decided to do some walking before getting a cab back to the hotel!
The next morning brought us to Friday where we packed up our bags and took the shuttle to the airport. ALl of our flights were on time on the way back and we made it back to Fort St John by 830. All in all it was a very fun trip and we really enjoyed it. We're thinking we should plan a fun trip every Spring Break!
It is now Saturday morning and Scout is back at home and happy about it! She was very excited to see us when we came to get her this morning! SHe is now happily sitting beside me chewing on her Kong.
So ends a good vacation. Now it is back to the real world with laundry and cleaning this weekend, an apartment inspection Monday, a visit to the lawyers about house stuff and of course, back to work!!!

Spring Break is Here!!!

Chris, Scout and I have survived the last week of work and have made it to Spring Break!!! Today we are busily getting organized for our trip to San Diego!! It's 9o'clock in the morning and we are on the 3rd load of laundry, the dishwasher is running, and we still need to vaccuum and clean the bathrooms. Chris has to run up to the bank for some american cash, and we have to pack up our suitcase. The last thing we have to do is drop Scout off at the kennel before four o'clock. I am hoping she will be excited to go there today. It was so hard to take her there the first time, but I feel much better about it now. I know she will have fun there, and the lady who looks after them all really loves them, so we have good piece of mind knowing she is well looked after there. They have five acres of fenced property and the dogs go out five times a day to run and play with each other. Scout just lives to play with other doggies so she will be in heaven!!
Back to the trip!! We are leaving Sunday morning, and have quite the puddle jumping journey to get there! We stop in Vancouver, Portland, San Francisco and finally San Diego, which means all the flights are short, but I hate the up and down and up and down!! It reminds me of when Mary and I went to Nova Scotia back in 2001!!! Hopefully we can avoid the motion sickness. We're bringing lots of water to drink with us!!! We have four full days to spend doing fun things while we are there, and then we head back to FSJ on Friday around lunch time. That still gives us the weekend before heading back to work.
Well, I hope everyone is doing well. I know you folks in schools in MB don't get your break for another two weeks, but I hope you have a great time when you get it.
Take care, everybody, and we will chat again when we return!!
